Our expert team has been installing air source heat pumps in homes throughout the West Midlands for the past year, and we’re seeing interest in heat pumps really starting to increase.
As getting a heat pump involves making fairly significant changes to your existing heating, we conduct a detailed survey to make sure we’re designing a system that’s exactly right for your home. In this blog post we explain what happens during one of our heat pump surveys, and how to go about booking in with us.
Should I choose a virtual or an in-home survey?
We know that life can get busy at times, so you can choose whether to have an online survey or have our surveyors visit your home for extra peace of mind. Whichever survey you choose, it will typically not take longer than 2 hours, but this depends on the size of your property.
To book an online survey, you’ll need detailed floor plans of your property showing measurements. The virtual survey would take place via a Zoom video call, so ideally you will need to have the app downloaded and installed on a portable device, like a phone or tablet.
We always recommend having a surveyor visit your home! This helps us maximise the effectiveness of the survey and helps us develop a relationship with you and your home.

What will a heat pump survey cover?
Your surveyor will be looking at the following things during a heat pump survey:
Detailed measurements: Our surveyors will perform a heat-loss assessment of your property on a room-by-room basis for the most accurate results, which includes measuring all rooms, windows, and radiators.
Placement of your heat pump: We will assess where you can place your heat pump on the outside of your property.
Mounting options: The majority of the heat pumps we install are floor mounted; although we can advise whether wall mounting would be an option.
Hot water cylinder: We’ll assess your existing hot water cylinder to see if it could be used as part of your new heating system. If you do not have a cylinder, we will advise as to where this would be installed as well as how much it would cost.
The layout of your system: The survey team will gather all of the data we need to enable our technical and design teams to design your heating system.
Radiators: We’ll assess if you need to upgrade any of your radiators. Heat pumps sometimes require radiators with a larger surface area to ensure efficient operation, but this doesn’t always mean we have to replace every radiator. Each home is different.
Underfloor heating: Depending on your circumstances and requirements, we’ll assess whether underfloor heating is an option and expected costs.
Settings and configurations: We will discuss your flow temperature and settings. These can make a difference to the size of heat pump you need, often meaning lower costs.
Electricity load: We will review your electricity load and meters to ensure they are suitable for adding a heat pump.
Sound assessment: We will carry out a sound assessment to ensure that your heat pump will be quieter than 42dB, measured from one meter away from your closest neighbour’s door or window. For reference, most fridges range from 30-50 dB in volume.
Special requirements: We will consider any special requirements you might have like Solar Thermal, underfloor heating, or design challenges such as where to position your hot water cylinder and finishing touches.
Payment options: We’ll give you a full overview of how you can pay for your new system, including how the Government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme works which could get you £7,500 off your new heat pump.
What areas in your property will we need to access?
To complete a successful survey and propose a heat pump installation that complies with Microgeneration Certification Scheme standards, which is essential to applying for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, our surveyor will need unrestricted access to the following areas. If you have opted for a virtual survey, we will need you to access these on our behalf during the video call, or via photographs:
- Every room and radiator in your property.
- Your loft space.
- Hot water tank (if relevant).
- Internet Router.
- Water softener (if relevant).
- Gas meter (if relevant).
- Electricity meter.
- Thermostat(s).
