Air Source Heat Pumps Explained: Everything You Need to Know

As the UK accelerates toward net zero carbon emissions, home heating is one of the biggest battlegrounds.

Traditional fossil-fuel boilers are being challenged by renewables, and among the solutions gaining traction is the air source heat pump.

But what exactly is an air source heat pump, how does it work, and is it right for your home or business?

How Does an Air Source Heat Pump Work?

Heat absorption: Outdoor air passes over the evaporator coil containing a cold refrigerant. The refrigerant picks up heat and vaporises.

Compression: The refrigerant gas is compressed, which increases its temperature and pressure.

Heat release: The hot gas passes through a condenser coil, transferring heat into your home’s heating system (radiators, underfloor loops, or a hot water cylinder).

Expansion & repeat: The cooled refrigerant expands, drops in pressure, returns to a liquid, and cycles back to absorb more heat.

Because of this cycle, a well-sized air source heat pump can operate efficiently even when outdoor temperatures are low (down to around -15 °C or so, depending on the model).

The performance (efficiency) is often expressed as the coefficient of performance (COP) or seasonal performance factor (SPF). The higher this is, the more heat you get per unit of electricity.

Benefits of an Air Source Heating System

Energy efficiency & lower running costs
Because ASHPs move heat rather than generate it from scratch, they can be 3-4× more efficient than direct electric or fossil fuel systems. That means lower energy bills in many cases.

Reduced carbon emissions
By eliminating or reducing reliance on gas, oil or other fossil fuels, heat pumps make it easier to decarbonise your home or business.

Year-round operation
Many systems can also help with hot water, not just space heating.

Compatibility with renewable electricity
Pairing a heat pump with solar PV, for example, amplifies the green credentials.

Future-proofing & incentives
The UK government supports transitions to low-carbon heating via schemes like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (which currently offers £7,500 toward installation), For many households, this helps offset the higher upfront cost.

Is an Air Source Heat Pump Right for You?

Every property is different. But as a rule of thumb:

  • Well-insulated homes benefit most

  • Properties with underfloor heating or low-temperature radiators are ideal

  • If you’re replacing an existing heating system (oil, electric, LPG), a heat pump often offers real gains

  • If your radiators are small or inefficient, you may need to upgrade them

Heat From Air conducts full surveys to assess suitability, taking in insulation levels, emitter sizing, property layout and user habits.

Step-by-Step: How to Move Forward

Initial enquiry & site survey

Contact Heat From Air. They’ll assess your home, insulation, heating demands, and give you a tailored recommendation.

System design & quotation

They’ll propose a system (monobloc, split, cylinder, controls), give estimated running costs and ROI, and explain trade-offs.

Apply for incentives

Use the Boiler Upgrade Scheme or other local grants. Heat From Air can help you with compliance and paperwork.

Installation

The installation team handles everything, from mounting the external unit, routing pipework, integrating with heating circuits, and commissioning the system.

Testing & optimisation

After installation, the system is tuned, controls configured, and performance measured.

Ongoing support & maintenance

Regular servicing keeps efficiency high, catches faults early, and helps extend system life.

Speak to the Experts

As the world confronts climate change, the way we heat our homes will be a vital battleground.

Air source heat pumps offer a powerful, efficient, and scalable way to shift from fossil fuels to low-carbon heating.

By extracting heat from the ambient air, you can deliver reliable warmth and hot water with a fraction of the emissions.
